I am a Hairstylist and a trim for split ends could be anywhere between 1/4 - 2 inches off..also trimming up your layers also helps with the split ends in the middle of your hair.Always remember to visit your stylist every 4-6 weeks to help maintain healthy hair..
Split ends are when your hair splits and then the break runs up the hair strand.. so it depends on how bad the split is. If your hair is healthy and you have just a few then I'd say about 1/4 an inch.
