There's something called Sun-In that you can buy at any drugstore:

i would suggest you not try options that are not professional. lightning your hair is a serious process. it can only be done with a bleach... and i am not speaking of clorox for the clothes. it is also a process that can leave your hair very brittle and dry. so in other words, if you do find something that would lighten your hair but not professionally, in the end, you will have more serious issues to attack, like why is my hair so frizzy, dry and unhealthy looking , especially on the ends. i say go professional. its worth your time, money, guarantee, and being bald headed in the end.
I'm not sure, but Whatever You Do: DO NOT get that spray-in-your-hair bleaching stuff sometimes called ';Sun-In';... it KILLS your hair and turns it orange, and you'll never get rid of the effects until it grows out.
Alright, so I know there are so many answers on this page so hopefully I can explain a little easier to understand...I you have NEVER colored or Highlighted your hair it is consitered to be ';Virgin';, therefore you can lift it to a fairly light shade without using ';bleach';. For that I would reccommend going to a sallys beauty supply or something similar and purchasing your own color (color needs a developer so dont forget to ask about that!) Now, if you have previously colored your hair I would recommend ';bleach'; or as I call it lightner. As long as you are not overprosessing your hair (leaving it on 45min or longer) or applying it to the scalp this product should be fine. (Avoid a 30 or 40 volume developer) A good do-it-yourself technique is applying the bleach to a comp and running the comb from hair root to end...this is bayalague. Or select a few peices you want lighter and apply and wrap in foil! So, I hope I helped you out!
PS- SUN IN IS A BAD IDEA! this product contains matallic salts that can permently alter the color or your hair so you many never reach the lighter shade you desire!
buy some Sun In. my friends have had good results.
if you listen to anyone on this page listen to the stylist up there! Unless you want hair falling out or extremely damaged hair (with no going back to healthy hair), don't bleach it yourself. Bleaching is probably the most damaging chemical process you can make your hair go through and only a professional should handle it. Sun in is horrible-it is very acidic and dries out the hair and damages it. Using lemons to lighten hair does the same thing. I used it once and my hair turned an orangey lighter brown color (I have medium brown hair, should have known better). Not cool. Seriously, go to a salon. I know someone who bleached her own hair and a lot of it fell out. You can make damaged hair FEEL better, but you can't repair it forever once it's been destroyed.
