Go to your nearest beauty supply store (not Sally's as I find some of those girls are not knowledge able), ask them for a really good conditioner/re-constructor.

After you get out of the shower put a good amount of this stuff all through your hair, stick it in a shower cap, sit your butt down, and blow dry all over the cap for 10 minutes. This will open your hair cuticle and let the treatment in your hair follicle. Do this about 2-3 times a week and you will start to see your hair getting softer and more manageable.

Also if you can lay off the hair straighting for awhile, this will help, but if you must straighten your hair, use a heat protecting cream, serum or spray before you use a hot tool on your hair.
hair extensions.
hmm, tough :( Get a good hot oil treatment and use it twice weekly, and stop straightening it. If you can't part with your flat iron temporarily, stop blow drying it. If you dye it darker you may see a little improvement, however the only noticable thing you could do would be to get a GOOD(not cheap, sadly) hot oil treatment. They make some for at-home.
Don't just cut it short. Cut it all off so that it will grow back completely naturally. Yes, you may want to invest in a wig or two for a short period of time. Also, you really should consult a professional.
